New beds, old beds, any bed that you sleep on for eight hours every night should be a place of rest and comfort. However, for many people, their bed is anything but restful. It can be downright miserable. Everyone knows that a new mattress can make a world of difference in getting a good night’s sleep. But what if your mattress is so old and worn out that it’s stopping you from getting a good night’s sleep? Does that sound like your bed? If so, you might need a new mattress sooner than you think. This isn’t something you should take lightly. If your mattress makes it tough to get comfortable and fall asleep quickly at night, several signs will let you know it’s time to upgrade.

Obvious sagging

Obvious sagging

First and foremost, if you notice apparent sagging in your mattress, it’s time to get a new mattress. Sagging is a natural occurrence, as every mattress will sag to a certain degree over time. However, when a mattress sags so dramatically that it’s no longer supportive, or when it is visibly lumpy and uneven, it’s time to retire that mattress. Similarly, if your mattress is so old that you can see the springs poking through the surface, you should probably get a new one. Old, worn-out springs can be painful and aren’t safe to sleep on.

Your Mattress is Noisy

Your Mattress is Noisy

Who knew that mattresses were supposed to be quiet? If your mattress makes noise when you move around on it, it might be time to replace it. While most new mattresses will make some noise, excessive creaking and groaning are signs that your mattress is old, worn out, and ready to be retired. An old and worn-out mattress will be more problematic than just noisy. If you have an old mattress, it might be tearing away at your sheets and pilling them up between the mattress and box spring. You may notice a lot of pilling on sheets that have been used on an old mattress.

You Feel Achy

If you’re feeling achy and uncomfortable every time you go to bed, your mattress may be to blame. If you’ve noticed that you’ve started to feel achy and discomforted while in bed, that could be a sign that your mattress is too firm or that it’s been used for way too long and is ready to be replaced. Achy joints and muscles can signify that your mattress is too firm. If your mattress is too firm, it can pressure your joints and cause your muscles to tense up. When your mattress is too old and firm, it can pressure your joints, especially in your lower back, and cause your muscles to tighten up, making it difficult to relax and fall asleep.

Visible Signs of Wear

Mattresses are enormous pieces of equipment. They’re often several feet long and come in two halves. They’re designed to last for a long time, and they’re also designed to take a fair bit of wear and tear without wearing out. If your mattress is well past its prime, you’ll notice visual signs of wear, such as tears and stains.

If you notice a tear in your mattress, it’s time to replace it. Tearing a mattress is a surefire way to shorten its lifespan and kill any warranty it may have had left. Mattress stains signify even more wear and tear on your mattress. When a stain is left on a mattress for a long time, it becomes part of the fabric, which can be extremely hard to get out, shortening the lifespan of your mattress even further.

You’re Getting Hot

A comfortable mattress should keep you cool and regulated while you sleep. If your bed is making you hot, it’s a sign your mattress is worn out. As your mattress wears out, it loses its ability to regulate body temperature. When a mattress loses its ability to regulate body temperature, it will start to trap and retain heat.

This will make your mattress feel much more like a sweltering sauna than a place of rest and comfort. If you notice that your mattress is making you hot, check the tag and see what type of material it’s made of. If your mattress is made from latex or another synthetic material, it may trap and retain too much heat. You can reduce the heat your bed is retaining by adding a memory foam or latex topper. These toppers will add a new layer of comfort and support while also better regulating your body temperature.

Active allergies

If you’re a person who suffers from allergies, you know that sometimes your symptoms can be triggered by seemingly harmless things. You may even be unsure of what’s causing your symptoms. If you’re sleeping on an old, worn-out mattress and your allergies are getting worse, there’s a chance it’s the mattress that’s causing the problem.

When a mattress is past its prime, it can break down. This breakdown can include a buildup of dust mites, molds, and other allergens. When these allergens are trapped in your mattress, it’s tough to get rid of them. Many allergists will recommend against using your mattress if you have allergies. If you’re sleeping on an old, worn-out mattress, it’s almost guaranteed that it’s infested with allergens.

It’s Been 7 Years or More

Your mattress is the foundation of your nightly routine. When you hit the hay, everything from your diet to your daily stress levels is being put to bed with you. Therefore, it’s not surprising that you can see severe signs of wear after just a few years. If your mattress is at least seven years old, it’s probably time to look into getting a new one. When you first buy a new mattress, it will seem like it will last forever. However, it’s important to remember that your mattress is a piece of equipment, and its lifespan won’t last forever without proper maintenance. If you’ve had your mattress for at least seven years, it’s time to start looking for a new one. You should also be sure to clean your mattress properly once a year.

Conclusion

We hope you know what signs you need to look out for to know that it’s time for a new mattress! Now, the only thing left to do is find yourself a new mattress! A new mattress is a beautiful way to improve your sleep and make your nights restful. Don’t be afraid to retire your mattress when used for too long.

Start sleeping better! Freshen up your sleep
